This year Sexey’s School have seen the Year 8 Rugby Team go from strength to strength having regularly attended training sessions supported by Castle Cary Rugby Club.
After completing a 15-a-side season which comprised of numerous wins and tournament entries the team moved onto winter 7-a-side training led by Mr Glover. The 1st 7-a-side tournament was at Millfield School, where they were invited to play alongside a host of highly prestigious A-Teams from across the UK. The boys performed admirably and were very unlucky to not come away with some silverware, however it was a great learning experience and one which they took forward into subsequent training sessions.
The team’s final tournament of the season was held at Perins School, where they looked to build on their recent 7’s experience and their success at the tournament the year before.
The boys started very slowly scraping a win in the first game and then kicked on from there with subsequent convincing wins in their next two matches. The team finished the pool stage with a very close encounter which they narrowly lost. It was a nail-biting wait to find out who was progressing and at what level. In the end there were three teams tied for the top spot and it came down to number of tries scored to work out the final standings which placed Sexey’s 2nd in the group to go into the Bowl Final.
The team kicked off in the final and immediately asserted their dominance and scored 2 quick tries. They continued to push throughout the game and made a further 2 scores, only conceding one try to win the match and become Bowl Final Champions.
Director of Sixth Form and Sports Teacher, Mr Moise said “Congratulations to the Year 8 Rugby Team on their amazing season of Rugby. They have been extremely dedicated to keep up with training, despite the pressures of other sports competing for their time”.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Glover for running extra training sessions for the Year 8 Team, as well as the coaches at Castle Cary RFC, Mr Barnett and Mr McLennan that have given up their time. Well done boys, roll on next season and more opportunities for silverware!!”
Sexey’s School also send thanks to Castle Cary RFC for kindly sponsoring the team strip for the Lower School Rugby Teams alongside a donation in kind from O’neills who produced the kits.
